A Beginner’s Guide to Snorkeling Safely
Simple habits for calm, confident time on the reef
Snorkeling is one of the easiest ways to discover the underwater world. These simple habits will keep you — and the reef — safe.
Check your gear
Your mask should seal gently without the strap. Practise breathing through the snorkel in shallow water before heading out.
Choose calm conditions
Start in sheltered, shallow water on a calm day. Ask locally about currents, and avoid snorkeling alone.
Stay visible and float
Wear a brightly coloured rash guard and consider a snorkel vest. Floating calmly uses less energy than kicking.
Look, don’t touch
- Never stand on or touch coral
- Keep a respectful distance from turtles and fish
- Use reef-safe sunscreen, or cover up with a rash guard instead
Know when to stop
If you feel tired, cold or uncomfortable, head back. There is always tomorrow.
