A beach holiday with children can be wonderfully simple — if the basics are right.

Choose the right stay

• Check for pool fencing or a pool alarm
• Look at stairs, balconies and drops
• Ask whether a cot and high chair are available
• A shaded outdoor space is invaluable for naps and play

Pick a gentle beach

Calm, shallow water and soft sand are worth more than a famous name. Ask your host which beaches are sheltered.

Plan around the heat

Beach in the morning, shade or a nap in the middle of the day, and back outside in the late afternoon.

Keep it simple

Rock pools, sandcastles and a good snorkel mask will keep most children busy for hours.
